Please explain again
Giorgio and Ueli, please forgive me for not following properly what the discussion between you about endogenous development signifies exactly. I'm not sure whether the two of you are coming from different pragmatic, political and philosophical traditions or if it is just a semantic/linguistic misunderstanding. If there are conflicting views then this is not something to shy away from or postpone, but an opportunity to sharpen all of our thinking. It might help if you could both try to explain again in simple terms for those who are not so familiar with the field, what are the main ideas arising from this part of the discussion that might lead to alternative practices being advocated. Is there an underlying conflict of interest between different parties involved in the intended development process perhaps? Three ideas from the chat The next chat is on Monday 23rd Jan at 20.00 GMT The transcript from the previous one is available in this topic and on the AR wiki topics covered were: advisory board idea, andys research, AR, AR wiki, choosing, conference links idea, CPsquare, gathering people, interests and methodologies, issues with chat tech, planning ahead, re tagging topic, referring to async discussion, starting from a problem, Suzanne's EVO, unexplained,web2.0,what is the idea, what to discuss in the chat, why participate, The synchronous chat on Monday identified three ideas to be brought back to the asynchronous discussion Idea1 a suggestion to set up an 'advisory board' above stakeholders to advise specific CoPs management further details here: advisory_board_idea_1 Idea 2 to do more to facilitate persistent interlinks between the 85 conference attendees further details here: conference_links_idea_2 Idea 3 to take up an offer to participate in a small piece of distributed cross-cultural/linguistic action research involving being guests at a workshop for Portuguese practitioners further details here: Beverly's_workshop_idea_3 [Wiki: Resource] Theoreticians Theory, Resources , links Theoreticians Kurt Lewin is generally as the person who coined the term ëaction researchí http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-lewin.htm#actionresearch Paulo Friere emphasis on dialogue and concern for the oppressed http://www.infed.org/thinkers/et-freir.htm Orlando Fals-Borda Humberto Maturana a Chilean biologist and philosopher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humberto_Maturana Chris Argyris theories of action, double-loop learning and organizational learning http://www.infed.org/thinkers/argyris.htm Links Ueli's story about the poor lady and the fodder specialist Ueli Scheuermeier, "The poor lady and the fodder specialist" #1, 19 May 2003 2:11 pm In case this is not accessible, there is a copy here fodder_specialist Bob Dick's AR site at http://www.scu.edu.au/schools/gcm/ar/arhome.html FAQ: http://www.scu.edu.au/schools/gcm/ar/arp/arfaq.html Andy's embryonic DAR wiki http://distributedresearch.net/wiki AoIR http://aoir.org/ AoIR mailing list http://listserv.aoir.org/listinfo.cgi/air-l-aoir.org CIRN http://www.ciresearch.net/ Design conference with former participants and guests http://www.cpsquare.org/edu/News/archives/000063.html accessible story and blog I've managed to access the story, Ueli and I've copied it onto the wiki in here in case of difficulties. It's such an illustrative story, is there a copy on the open web anywhere and if not may I quote it? The blog is not a problem, it's just that there haven't been any entries for a long time so the main page shows up blank. You can still access the old entries from the side navigation under "Archives" or recent entries" which blog maybe this one: http://www.cpsquare.org/PGs/rural/ Resources, links and brainstorms -- Start. With the Async discussion in flow this may not seem quite so necessary as a starter, but I'm thinking it may be a quicker way to arrive at a plan for conducting some small AR activity over the period of the rest of this conference. Kelly and Naava have indicated that they can't make 16th but would like to chat on Monday the 23rd Jan at 20:00 GMT so I am proposing that all are invited to both/either dates, which may be very useful even if the attendance is only small. Transcripts to be retrieved and posted here, async discussions to continue freely. Synchronous Chat For arranging synchronous chat about Action Research and CoPs Hi Giorgio, It great to hear about your work in Chile. I noticed from your introduction that you seem to be talking about very large scale projects whereas I am working on quite small scale research and yet the term Action Research is employed to describe a whole spectrum of methods and scenarios. Some of your terminology I am familiar with, and some not. Please could you explain PRA, AI , SSM - I'll start up a glossary in the wikispace. I totally agree with your idea that an evaluation of the tools and methods can become an action research itself, it's almost the most important thing because any improvement in the method of research and communications should have a multiplying beneficial effect on the overall outcomes. When you talk about local communities and also CoPs, I'm wondering how you can see these converging. I have seen some attempts to create geographical based online communities and they sometimes fail because people don't necessarily share any common interests let alone practice just because they live in the same locality. That's something I'd like to explore further because international communities don't suit all cultures either. Going back to the methods and technologies, out of all those mentioned - and some are unknown to me - openspace technology, group feedback analysis, different mappings, forcefield analysis and so on, are there any which you would pick as working well for you, and are there any web sites about the work which I may be able to browse with a translation tool or perhaps in English? I hope you will continue to expand and explore these ideas with us here. Action Research topic I think I have a few people interested in the idea of action research with CoPs so I've suggested scheduling a synchronous chat session to explore further. Looking at the schedule, the best day to avoid clashing with the teleconfs seems to be Monday 16th at 20.00 GMT. I'm aware that some rescheduling is going on and I am quite flexible about the day so is that OK in principle? If so then I have some details to sort out. If I use the general chat area, how do I make sure a transcript is saved. Should I create a folder for the topic alongside blogs, wikis , tagging etc or perhaps in a 'conference fringe' area. What to examine and proposed synchronous session Hi Kelly, one of the qualities of some types of action research which I'm interested in is emergence. It's possibly related to 'Grounded Theory', and the idea is that you don't tie yourself down too soon by deciding what your research questions are going to be. Instead, you allow the priorities, questions and even the focus of the research to emerge out of the findings and discussions amongst the participants. So you might ask your CoP what they feel most needs to be examined or improved about the way it impacts on their learning and take it from there. I don't know if that helps at all but thanks for your interest and I'd like to explore more as well. There seems to be a few people here we might be able to develop the conversation with so I'm thinking of initiating a synchronous chat session on the subject of distributed action research in about a week or so's time, perhaps at the same time of day as the scheduled teleconfs but on a day when there isn't one. Would that suit anyone? |
