Against metaphors
For me, one of the key ideas of web2.0 is about the web coming of age as a medium in its own right, with the capacity to create competely new structures which are based on the potential functionality of the network itself, working out its own way of doing things unrestrained by the early days of trying to use the web to mimic methods and structures from conventional formats. So on the whole, I feel that metaphors are holding us back more than they are helping us to understand. Online spaces are very different to physical spaces, email is not like writing letters, blogs are not diaries and wikis are not like anything which has existed before. Hyde Park has a river running through it with some paddleboats, an art gallery and cafĂ. At various times in the past few decades, up to half a million people have assembled there with one common purpose - to stop the war or try to prevent deployment of nuclear missiles for example. metaphors that won't die I finally managed to view the ppt after struggling with the Gates/Jobs divide. I'd be interested to hear what you the voiceover would have to say about metaphors that won't die. |
