Technology

Playing an active role in an intense month long conference about web2.o technologies provided a rich source of learning, particularly about the social implications from innovation. Specifically, I learned to appreciate the community linking potential of social tagging, the implications for platforms of 'mashups', the concept of social software 'tuned for discussion' and a litt;le about social network analysis.

discussion engines

In another forum I have helped to test 'Marginalia' an online discussion tool designed according to pedagogical principles of computer conferencing as expounded by Andrew Feenberg since 1982.

digital audio

In terms of competencies, I have developed further skills in producing better quality audio files using audacity and taken this further to include tutorial style screenshot movies with sound. Here is one more example in which I help a fellow student in the technical support area who wanted advice about compressing audio output from Audacity:

MediaWiki

I've learned how to deploy the appropriate plugins and PHP scripts to allow the rendering of RSS streams, which will enable a whole new cycle of research as the wiki becomes equipped to host dynamic pages of, for example deli.cio.us tag streams and research blogs. But this entails an upgrade to the database which I have postponed a couple of weeks for precautionary purposes.
