Keeping good records is crucial, but there may be different approaches.

Since the research is being done online, it doesn't make a lot of sense to keep handwritten notes, except perhaps when reflecting on the bigger picture, which might be done better away from the computer sometimes.

Data which is automatically accumulated by software systems might be left where it is for analysis later, or it may be sifted and extracted on the fly. If doing the latter, it's best done as soon as possible, at least daily, otherwise it can get wasteful checking back to see what has already been taken care of.
